Dr. Alexis Bordet to receive the Jochen Block Prize 2026

Outstanding recognition for research in the field of catalysis

The MPI CEC is delighted that Alexis Bordet, group leader of the “Multifunctional Catalytic Systems” research group, has been honored with the Jochen Block Prize 2026. This award, presented by the German Society for Catalysis (GeCatS), recognizes outstanding achievements by young scientists in the field of catalysis. Alexis Bordet shares this year's prize with Dr. Schirin Hanf from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

The Jochen Block Prize is one of the most prestigious awards for young catalysis researchers in Germany and has been presented annually since 2004. It is endowed with 3,000 euros and sponsored by Clariant SE. The award recognizes work that stands out for its originality, scientific progress, and independence.

Dr. Bordet is being honored for his work on multifunctional and adaptive catalytic systems that could play a pioneering role in the chemical industry.

He and his team conduct research at the interface between heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, with a particular focus on the activation and transfer of molecular hydrogen. His work concentrates on the development of innovative catalyst systems that can respond flexibly to changing conditions. A particular highlight of his research is magnetically induced catalysis (MICat), in which catalytic activity is controlled by alternating current magnetic fields. This technology makes it possible to deliver energy to the catalyst in a targeted and efficient manner, which is particularly important in connection with intermittent energy sources such as wind or solar energy.

Dr. Bordet's research has already received early recognition. In 2024, he was awarded the Carl Zerbe Prize by the German Society for Sustainable Energy Sources, Mobility and Carbon Cycles (DGMK). His work is making a significant contribution to the development of sustainable and resource-efficient solutions for the chemical industry.

The award will be presented at the 59th Annual Meeting of German Catalysts from March 18 to 20, 2026, in Weimar. The entire MPI CEC is proud of this award, which not only recognizes Alexis Bordet's outstanding scientific achievements but also highlights the institute's innovative research work. Congratulations to Alexis!
