Clusters of excellence chosen

MPI CEC involved in four projects

In the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Government to strengthen top-level research at universities in Germany, decisions have been made today on the future clusters of excellence. The Excellence Commission, composed of the scientists of the international expert panel and the Science Ministers of the federal and state governments, selected a total of 57 clusters of excellence for funding from 88 funding applications in Bonn.
The MPI CEC is involved in four of these applications, all of which will (continue to) receive funding.

CEC Director <link internal-link internal link in current>Prof. Walter Leitner is deputy spokesman and a member of the management team of the "Fuel Science Center" cluster at RWTH Aachen University: "Synthetic fuels based on non-fossil raw materials are an essential component of future energy systems. They offer the possibility of harvesting renewable energy for mobility and transport and at the same time reducing possible pollutant loads. In order to exploit this potential, interdisciplinary teams from the fields of chemistry, biology, process engineering, mechanical engineering and social sciences are researching solutions for a sustainable interface between energy and chemistry in the 'Fuel Science Center'".

The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion is looking forward to working with the RWTH Aachen University, the Jülich Research Centre and the MPI für Kohlenforschung on fundamental questions relating to the design of bio-hybrid fuels.

In addition to the Fuel Science Center, the clusters "Vereinigung von Systemen in der Katalyse" (UniSysCat), RESOLV and e-Conversion, in which the MPI CEC and the <link http: www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de _blank external-link-new-window internal link in current>Fritz Haber Institute are involved, are also being funded.
