A very special honor was bestowed on the two Mülheim Max Planck Institutes: The apprenctices Sophie von Buttlar from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion and René Rotthaus from Coal Research are among the winners. In addition, the Max Planck Institutes in Mülheim will once again be honored for their excellent apprenticeship program with the Apprenticeship Award .

Outstanding professional, educational and personal achievements - these are the criteria used by the Max Planck Society when awarding the Awards for apprentices. Among the 600 persons completing an apprenticeship at a Max-Planck-Institute, this year 15 were selected – and two of them work in Mülheim an der Ruhr: Sophie von Buttlar passed her apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory assistant early this summer with flying colors at the MPI for Chemical Energy Conversion (MPI CEC), and René Rotthaus is in his third year of training as a physics laboratory assistant at the Max Planck Institute für Kohlenforschung (MPI KOFO).

"Usually we have scientists who stand on the podium to be honored for their academic research successes," tells Administrative Director Dr Verena Schultz-Coulon within the framework of a small ceremony at the Kohlenforschung. "I am very pleased that today we are focusing on two apprentices who have earned the Max Planck Society's Apprenticeship Award through their special diligence, commitment and outstanding achievements," says Schultz-Coulon during the presentation of the certificates.

Award as recognition and incentive for the training team
The training team also had reason to be happy: the two Institutes were jointly honored for their exemplary work with the MPG's Apprenticesship Award, which comes with a bonus of 7,500 euros. "The training team puts a lot of knowledge, commitment and dedication into their work and has been training excellent professionals for years. We are very pleased about the recognition and hope that all those involved will see this award as an incentive and will continue to contribute to the development of our training program," says the Administrative Director.

Apprenticeships at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion in Mülheim
The MPI CEC offers apprenticeships for chemical and physics laboratory technicians, industrial mechanics, electronics technicians for energy and building technology as well as for devices and systems, IT specialists for system integration, office management specialists and, this year for the first time, carpenters. In addition to practical instruction in the research groups and analytical departments, the apprentices regularly receive additional in-house instruction in the specialist areas of chemistry and physics and have excellent links with other apprenticeship companies. Currently, 26 apprentices are completing their vocational training at the institute.

Apprentice Award winner Sophie von Buttlar
Sophie von Buttlar completed her apprenticesship as a chemical laboratory assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion ahead of schedule this summer and is now working as an employed laboratory assistant at MPI CEC. She was able to convince the jury with her far-reaching commitment and strong performance. In addition to her work, the chemistry lab technician was elected to the youth and apprentices representation and has since represented the interests of apprentices at MPI CEC.

Apprentice Award winner René Rotthaus
Apprentice Award winner René Rotthaus is currently working as a 3rd year physics lab technician in the Department of Molecular Theory and Spectroscopy with Professor Frank Neese.
