Scientists from all over Germany discuss the multidimensionality of the corona pandemic and give recommendations for action

Third statement of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina on the "Corona crisis"

[Translate to EN:]

Together with other scientists from various disciplines, Prof. Robert Schlögl, Managing Director of the MPI CEC, calls for a sustainable strategy to cope with the coronavirus pandemic in a third ad hoc statement by Leopoldina.

The scientists agree that science carries a great deal of responsibility in coping with the corona crisis.
They analyze the spread of the virus and the measures taken so far, and give recommendations for action.

The recommendations focus on the multidimensionality of the pandemic, which must be considered in political decisions. Furthermore, measures must continue to be ecologically and socially sustainable and thus future-proof.

According to the researchers, a gradual normalization of public life can only be resumed under certain conditions:

  • the number of new infections stabilizes at a low level
  • the reserve capacities of the hospitals must be increased
  • the protection measures continue to be observed by the population in a disciplined manner

Only then a relaxation can be achieved for the retail and hospitality sector, professional and personal life.

Prof. Schlögl and his colleagues state that an intrinsic motivation based on self-protection and solidarity is more important than the threat of sanctions in order to achieve acceptance and implementation of measures among the population.
