Weeds become raw materials

MPI CEC launches joint project with Ethiopian University

The MPI CEC launched a new sustainability project with Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia to produce green chemicals from a weed that grows along the equator.
The collaboration was initiated by Prof. Walter Leitner and Prof. Yonas Chebude, head of the Faculty of Chemistry in Addis Abeba.

Chebude's research group is trying to produce sustainable chemical products - such as biodegradable plastics or adhesives - from the oil of the plant Vernonia galamensis, usually referred to as a "weed".
The catalysts needed for the process will be developed jointly between the two institutions.
