Hydrogen as a future technology: PrometH2eus project meeting at the MPI CEC

Lively exchange and great talks in Mülheim an der Ruhr

On 3 and 4 April 2025, the bi-annual status meeting of the BMBF-funded project network PrometH2eus took place at the MPI CEC. Project partners from all over Germany came together in Mülheim an der Ruhr to present and discuss the latest results on the development of high-performance oxygen electrodes for hydrogen production.

The PrometH2eus project network is part of the H2Giga lighthouse project, which is dedicated to the industrial production of green hydrogen as part of the National Hydrogen Strategy. PrometH2eus focuses on the synthesis, analysis and scaling of nickel-based anode materials for alkaline water electrolysis – a key technology for the energy transition. The aim of the meeting was to take stock of the current state of research and to provide new impetus for the last months of the project.

The two-day meeting was divided into highlight lectures from the three central research clusters: analysis, synthesis and application. The participating subprojects presented their most important results in compact presentations. Whether innovative materials, new characterization methods or advances in electrode design – the range of findings presented underlined the interdisciplinary approach of PrometH2eus.

A central goal of the meeting was to identify project-specific and cross-project findings that would further accelerate the transfer of knowledge from basic research to application. In intensive discussion rounds, common challenges were identified and perspectives for further practical development were discussed. The insights gained will be incorporated into the creation of a guideline that will serve as a future reference for the development of efficient oxygen electrodes – from the first laboratory sample to large-scale industrial use. The meeting in Mülheim marks the start of the final phase of PrometH2eus. Project coordinator Anna Mechler from RWTH Aachen University is optimistic: “We are planning the last scaling step – a crucial milestone in transferring our research results to an industrial scale. The meeting at the MPI CEC provided valuable impetus for this.”
